Welcome to the premier bicycling community in the United States!*

Sometimes it is nice to compare the Athens riding community to other riding communities to see how we rank. With this in mind we had our crack research team investigate the group riding opportunities in Davis, California and Boulder, Colorado. Both cities are routinely mentioned as the best bicycling cities compared to Athens (Research Project #1) . We then had the research team analyze group riding opportunities in the cities where the Southeastern Conference schools are located (Research Project #2). On our third research project, we had the research team evaluate the USA Today's, "10 best cycling towns in America: Readers' Choice picks" group riding opportunities in comparison to Athens (Research Project #3).

Research was conducted in February (Research Project #1) & March 2014 (Research Project #2) on the prior 2013 riding season; and June 2014 (Research Project #3) on the 2014 riding season; during daylight savings time to determine the number of free, open to all (and without a pre-ride contract-release signature required) evening group road bicycle rides offered.

Research Project #1

We analyzed the number of free, open to all (and without a pre-ride contract-release signature required) evening group road bicycle rides offered, during the biking season for Athens after the start of daylight savings time in March, and for Davis and Boulder in May.  Here are the results:

  • 1st Place: Athens, Georgia with 12 scheduled free and open to all evening group road rides (Mon-Fri)

  • 2nd & 3rd Place tie: Boulder, Colorado and Davis, California with 4

The results are even more dramatic when the populations of these three areas are reviewed. Athens Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) with 196,425 people, Boulder MSA with 305,318 people and Davis, part of the Sacramento MSA with 2,196,482 people.

Research Project #2
